windows vista private network with windows professional 2000

Windows vista private network with windows professional 2000 doesn't work. I have Windows Vista on my new laptop and Windows 200 professional on my desktop. I want to network these two machines as i have a lot of important data files, that i use and keep updating them. I need to keep the data with me everytime so i keep it on my laptop. But once the data is edited i need to sync them so i obviously need to network the computer. Please help guys!

When a new network is connected, vista detects it automatically, and you need to select private network or home network in order to network your vista machine with the others. Give an IP address on Windows 2000 computer and an IP of same range to Vista computer's IPv4. This must work out. Also make sure if the workgroup name is same, this may bother sometime...

Yeah, i did that already. I have a private IP of same range on both the computers. The workgroup is same for both computer and i also have enabled, network discovery option and turned on file sharing. But still i cannot see the other computer on network both ways...
