How to map a drive to Microsoft Sharepoint folder

Is there a way to map a drive to a Sharepoint folder? I am currently running Windows XP on my computer and my server is running Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007. Can I map a drive to it? If yes then please provide me the steps to do so?

Re: How to map a drive to Microsoft Sharepoint folder

Yes this is possible and here are the steps to achieve the same:
  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Select Tools - Map Network Drive
  3. Select your drive letter
  4. Under Folder : enter your url to your document library such as "http://www.server_name.com/Shared Documents"
  5. If you want to connect as a specific user click "Connect using a different name" and enter the other user credentials.
  6. Click on Finish

You can even do the same using command prompt:
  1. Go to "Start", select "Run" and type "cmd"
  2. Type: net use x: "http://www.server_name.com/Shared Documents" /user:DOMAIN\LOGIN PASSWORD

Thanks for the immediate reply. But I am unable to do what you have suggested. Can you help me out to get it done? Is there something which is required that I should do before following the steps that you gave me?

Sorry but I forgot to mention that you have to enable the WebClient service under Windows XP. To do so follow these steps:

1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. Type regedit and then click OK.
3. Locate and then click the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters
4. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
5. Type UseBasicAuth, and then press ENTER.
6. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
7. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
8. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

Re: How to map a drive to Microsoft Sharepoint folder

After I enabled the WebClient service, I was able to successfuly map the drive. One problem though, it won't let me rename files. I can upload and delete files fine, but not rename. Any other setting that I'd need for this?

I also have a My Network Place set up for the same Sharepoint drive, and I can rename files fine there.

I'm just trying to use SyncToy to sync a Sharepoint drive to a local copy and SyncToy renames the original file on the server before deleting it, so it has to do a lot of renaming in the process of syncing.
