How to remove unwanted virus alerts in system tray

I have been having this Virus Alert! problem that appeared in my System tray flashing under windows xp. However, there still remain a few problems, one of which is a message that says Virus Alert in my system tray. My spybot and Adware cannot find the file. How can I remove this item from my taskbar and delete it for good?

Your system is infected with a rogue antivirus program. Try going into safe mode and destroying it with AVG 7.5. If AVG doesn't pick it up then try going to safe mode and try disabling it there by ending the process of it and try manually search and destroy it. Does the system show Virus Alert! in the system tray at the clock ?

Download GMER 1.0.15, it is an application that detects and removes rootkits. You can changed installation method. It has Improved kernel & user mode code sections scanning. It has improved files scanning utility.

It scans for:

# hidden Alternate Data Streams
# hidden registry keys
# drivers hooking SSDT
# drivers hooking IDT
# drivers hooking IRP calls

To disable unwanted virus alerts in system tray, try the following steps :
  1. Go Start, click on Control Panel
  2. Open Security Center
  3. Then Click on the "Virus Protection" tab in the control panel.
  4. Click on the "Change the way Security Center alerts me" and Uncheck the box next to "Virus Protection" and click the "OK".
