What is a Domain Controller

I am learning windows server. I have some doubts about a concept called domain controller. What is it. I want a complete general idea about it. What is the role of Domain Controller. Why it is needed to set up. What are the roles performed by domain controller in windows server. I also want a procedure to create a Domain Controller for a reference. Thanks.

I am listing you the complete instruction to setup a windows domain controller in windows server 2003. This instructions include installation of DNS service also. First you will need a system which has windows server 2003.

1. Go to Start Menu > Run > Type dcpromo and click on OK.
2. An active directory windows wizard will pop up. Click on next.
3. Then select the first option Domain Controller for a new domain. Click on Next.
4. Then Select Domain in New forest. Click on Next.
5. Here you will need to provide the full DNS name for a domain. Eg. mywin.sampledomain. Click on Next.
6. Then give a netbios name. Eg.mywin. Click on Next.
7. Here you will need to browse the database folder and Log folder.
8. Then enter a SYSVOL folder location. Click on Next.
9. Click on the second option. Install and configure DNS..... Click on Next.
10. Select the second option. Permission Compatible only with... Click on Next
11. Give the passwords and click on next.
12. Keep clicking next and configure your TCP/IP.

Here you are end up and your DC is configured.
