Xbox LIVE play does not require a home network. You can connect your Xbox 360™ console directly to a cable or DSL modem with a standard Ethernet cable for a fast, trouble-free setup.

A direct connection has its disadvantages, however, including :

    • Your PC and your Xbox 360 system cannot access the Internet at the same time.

    • Swapping the modem connection between your Xbox 360 system and your PC gets old quickly.

    • Unless your Xbox 360 console and your TV are right next to your modem, you'll need to drape Ethernet cable across your house to enjoy an Internet connection.

Note : In most cases you will need to use your PC to configure your high-speed Internet modem for a direct connection with your Xbox 360 system. Contact your Internet provider for details.

    Other Troubleshooting Information :

    • Upgrade to the latest router firmware.
    • Open ports 88 and 3074. (There are non-NETGEAR sources that say this is unnecessary, however it is.) For a description of opening ports, see How is Port Forwarding Configured?
    • The MR314 works with 3.26 firmware, using port forwarding.
    • There is no known workaround for the RO318.

If your Internet connection uses PPPoE, set these filters:

    Filter : # : A : Type : Filter Rules : M : m : n
    1 : Y : Gen : Off=2, Len=3, Mask=ffffff, Value=002145 : Y : N : N
    2 : Y : Gen : Off=13, Len=1, Mask=ff, Value=01 : Y : N : N
    3 : Y : Gen : Off=24, Len=2, Mask=ffff, Value=0303 : N : D : F

If your Internet connection does not use PPPoE, try these filters:

    Filter : # : A : Type : Filter Rules : M : m : n
    1 : Y : Gen : Off=12, Len=3, Mask=ffffff, Value=080045 : Y : N : N
    2 : Y : Gen : Off=23, Len=1, Mask=ff, Value=01 : Y : N : N
    3 : Y : Gen : Off=34, Len=2, Mask=ffff, Value=0303 : N : D : F
