How to connect two computer via Modem

I want to connect two computers using modem. OS installed at these two computer windows xp. Could i put Ethernet card on one machine and switch the cable modem output coming from that machine to the another machine or Is there any program to connect them through modem.Any help will be extremely appreciated.

If the modem uses the network connection on our first machine then put the another card in second machine and connect them through network. Use the ICS on the computer attached to the cable modem and use it as a internet gateway.

There is program called hyperterminal in start > program > accessories > communications. Use that program to communicate with another machine. you can also transfer your file by this program. This will only work if you connect your cable modem separately. You can connect by dialing the number of machine from another in hyperterminal.
