    What is Generic PUP.x

I'm running Windows Xp as my operating system. I had installed Mcafee antivirus program on my system, in order to protect my system from viruses. Just few days back i was trying to scan my pc, but at the time of scanning i found some files containing Generic PUP.x in it. So, i would like to know that is this some kind of virus or malware program? Is my Mcafee antivirus program not working on my pc and fails to detect viruses? Can any body tell me that what is Generic PUP.x? Is it safe to have it on my system or should i delete it? Kindly provide me some information on the baove issue.

Generic PUP.x is a generic detection which is used to identify malicious files or Potentially Unwanted Program which promotes unpopular or useless and counterfeit security programs on your system.

Its not a virus or a Trojan, it only detects the potentially unwanted program (PUP) on your system. PUPs do not "infect" systems. They may be installed by a user individually or possibly as a part of a software package on your system. It only detect the files, registry, and network communication on your system.
