How does DNS works?

Hello,

I know that DNS plays the main role in message networking, and DNS is required at every step while delivering any message from a single terminal, but i dont know how does it work logically, how and what would be the pictorial architecture of DNS, please if anybody has any information please let me know.

Thanks for your help..

Re: How does DNS works?

DNS acts like a virtual phone operator for the internet and local networks. When any end user typed in ww.anyName.com or \\YourServerName both of these requests hit up a DNS server to ask it a simple question.

Where is this website or computer located. The DNS server returns a IP address (just like a physical street address) and then your browser can find it.

This the simple way DNS works..

DNS also serves as the "phone book" for the Internet by translating human-readable computer hostnames, into the so called IP address that networking equipment needs for delivering information.and Like this way message transfers.

Re: How does DNS works?

I will explain with the daily example like the telephone system, every telephone no has the unique number in the same way, any computer attached to the Internet has a unique number, that is its IP address. Also like the telephone system there is a directory inquiries service to help you find those numbers, and in the internet world it is referred to as the DNS.

Likewise, if you know a server's host name you can give that name to a DNS server and it will give you the IP address of that server.

Re: How does DNS works?

Configuring DNS Server

Login as Administrator, in the.
Control panel double click on network,
Click on Protocols and choose TCP/IP Properties,
Click on DNS, and in DNS Service Search Order click Add.
Type in the IP address which you earlier assigned to the server.(the one you are on now).

1. click on "Start > Programs > Administrative Tools > DNS Manager".
2. click on the DNS menu, and then choose "New Server".
3. Type the IP address of your DNS Server (192.168.1.77), and click OK.

NOTE: It is not necessary to restart your DNS server for Zone information to be valid, updating is being done like this: In the DNS Manager right click your DNS Server, and click "Update Server Data Files".
