AVG scan shutting down computer

Hello all,
I am running windows XP on my desktop. I have AVG free. I get all the updates successfully from avg. But whenever i try to scan my computer with avg, my computer automatically shuts down. I don't have any idea. What is going on?

Any suggestions?

It may be because of virus infections that AVG cannot detect or delete. Try to run some online virus scan like:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/WelcomePage.asp

Check that the system is not overheating from excessive dust or a bad fan. Also check your power saving settings, try disabling them while you do a scan. Shutdowns are almost always motherboard hardware problems.

Run CCleaner to clear registry. Also close any other program that may be running in the background. Check your hard drive for file or system errors by running chkdsk. Try running virus scans in safe mode. Last option is to reinstall AVG or go for any other Antivirus.
