To change any of your router settings, first of all you need access to the router’s control panel by browsing to the router’s IP address. Many routers will have the IP address displayed somewhere on the outside of the router. If not, you will need to read the documentation or contact the manufacturer for these details. Alternatively you could try obtaining an active routers IP address from your computer by going to Start > Run – now type in ‘cmd’ without the quotes (hit enter) at the black DOS screen type ‘ipconfig /all’ again without the quotes. The address shown against Default Gateway should be the IP address of your router.

Now open your browser and type in http://192.168.2.1 - this address is just an example and may not be the address of your particular router.

If you get the IP address correct you will be presented with a screen asking for the User Name and Password. You will need both of these before you can enter the routers heart.

You need to reset the router to its factory defaults by using the reset button the back of the router. The following link contains the step by step instructions on how to reset the router to factory settings. This will erase your entire config including the passwords so you can get back into the maintenance screen. Once you reset the router, the username and password will be admin and password or 1234 respectively.

    • Open your Internet browser, type the address of the router into the URL address bar, and open it. The address is typically in the form of 192.168.X.X. This is the local network address.

    • Enter the account name and password to open the router setup utility.

    • Navigate through the setup utility until you find the screen that will let you change the password. You will need to enter the old password to change it.

    • Decide on a new password that has good security to a hacker. The best password is more than 8 characters and uses both lower case and upper case letters and numbers. Some will allow you to use special characters also. Do not make the password anything that can be found in a dictionary or any date of significance.

    • Enter the old password in the change password page of the router. When prompted then enter the new password. You will be asked to enter it twice to confirm that the correct password is entered.

    • Immediately, record the new password in some secure location that you can find if you forget it.

    • Confirm the password change on the router page and log off the router. To check the information and that the router has been setup correctly with the new password, open the router address in the browser again and login with the new information. If you are able to login, you have successfully changed the password.
