Can't save Email password in Outlook Express

Hey Everyone,

My Outlook Express is unable to save my email password. I'm able to put a check mark against the "remember password" box, but when i save any settings and return back to the setup, i find my password cleared automatically and there is no check mark beside the box. When i try to click on Send/ Received tab it prompts me to enter the password, but after entering my password, the "remember password" box is greyed out and i can not put a check mark beside it. Can any one tell me that what exact problem do i have on my pc? Does any body have any idea about this issue? Kindly help me out to resolve this issue.

Back up the Registry

• Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
• Navigate to and select: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Protected Storage System Provider
• Right click Protected Storage System Provider and select Export.
• In the File name box, type a unique name for the key.
• In the Save In box, click a location for the file to be saved. Click Save.
• Cose Registry Editor.

Remove User Account Information

• Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
• Navigate to and select: HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Protected Storage System Provider
• Right click Protected Storage System Provider and select Permissions
• Click the user name for the user that is currently logged on and ensure that Read and Full Control permissions are both set to Allow.
• Click Advanced button, select the Permissions tab.
• Ensure that the currently logged on user is highlighted, that Full Control is listed in the Permissions column, and that This Key and Subkeys is listed in the Apply To column.
• Ensure that Replace Permission Entries on all Child Objects with Entries Shown Here that Apply to Child Objects has a checkmark in the box.
• Click Apply then click Yes in the Security dialogue box shown below.

• Click OK, then click OK again to return to Registry Editor.
• Expand the Protected Storage System Provider key by double clicking or using the plus (+) sign.
• Right click the user sub-key folder directly below the Protected Storage System Provider key.
• Click Delete and then click Yes in the Confirm Key Delete dialog box that appears.
• Close Registry Editor and reboot the computer

ASAP Outlook Express Accounts Password Recovery Tool:

The program recovers passwords and displays information for all set of identities for the current user. The password recovery tool has an additional feature for saving the recovered information about Outlook Express accounts configuration to a text file. So, it is also the great tool to Backup your email accounts settings.

It can easily restore the lost or forgotten passwords of accounts saved in Outlook Express, and also to save the restored passwords together with options such as: E-mail Account, Display Name, Incoming (POP3) Server Name, Incoming User Name, Incoming Server Password, Outgoing (SMTP) Server Name, Outgoing User Name, Outgoing Server Password, Identity name and password.

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.

When you start Windows, do not click Cancel in the logon dialog box. If you do not have a password, create a new one by typing it in the Password box, or create a null password by clicking OK. If you create a null password, you are no longer prompted to log on to Windows when Windows starts. Creating a null password does not prevent other people from accessing your computer, but does allow you to save your password when you are using Dial-Up Networking or a shared network resource.

NOTE: Creating a null password does not allow you to save your Dial-Up Networking password if you are using user profiles. Using user profiles prevents the Dial-Up Networking password from being saved.

This fix also applies to Outlook, other programs that store passwords in the Protected Storage System Provider sub branch of the Registry. It also corrects some issues with Internet Explorer and Autocomplete.

This is caused by a damaged Registry key. To Remove the broken Key in Windows® XP

1) Click Start, click Run, and then type regedt32 in the Open box.

2) Locate the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider

3) Right click the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System Provider key, and then Select Permissions.

4) In the Permissions for Protected Storage System Provider dialog box, click the Advanced tab. Make sure that the <Username> has Full Control access. Select "Replace permission entries..."

5) Click OK.

6) Repeat steps 3 through 5 for each subkey that is listed under the Protected Storage System Provider registry key; otherwise, you may receive the following error message when you try to delete the Protected Storage System Provider key.

7) At this point, you can delete the Protected Storage System Provider key by clicking Delete on the Edit menu. If you prefer, you can first export a copy of this key, and then delete the key. To export the key, right click the Protected Storage System Provider key, and select Export. The exported file can be re-imported by double clicking on it.

8) When you click Delete, you receive the following message:

• Registry editor will delete the currently selected key and all its subkeys. Do you want to continue the operation?
  
• Click Yes to finish the process.

9) Start Outlook Express. When Outlook Express checks your mail account(s) you will be able to re-enter your password(s). This process repopulates the Protected Storage System Provider registry key with the correct information for that computer's SID.
