I think that you speak of a "intranet".
It should be that on a network or a router that gives you access to the Internet from the LAN and the gateway address is configured on your Vista laptop in the setting of your network connection either by hand or via DHCP.
Everything is chewed with Vista, a little effort, a minimum of research and reflection and you should understand that.
I think you speak Ethernet network.
For the config, it depends on your ISP. In principle, you found a box that acts as a router (possibly activated as free in the console). Then you branch your PC or ethernet, or wifi and normally with Vista you can then connect, it's done. Here you should access the Internet from all positions that are connected to your network.
Can your Vista laptop PING your router/modem?
The address is usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.2.1
Have you entered the correct default gateway and DNS server settings into the new machine. If not then this explains why it cannot see the internet.
