How to connect to a remote computer

Hi,

I have Two computer one with the local computer and the remote computer are running Vista Ultimate, and I'm logged on with an administrator-level account. On the remote machine I've enabled the Remote Administration firewall exception, started the Remote Registry service, and established an SMB/named pipes session with net use \\computer\IPC$ /user:username. This works perfectly if the remote machine is running XP. For the Vista machine, however, Computer Management connects, but whenever I try to access
something I get an "Access is denied" error.

Is there something else I need to tweak on the remote Vista machine to make this work?

Thanks.

Re: How to connect to a remote computer

Did you UTFW - in this case, did you join the computers to the domain by using in a browser //<server>/connectcomputer?
If you did, then it should just work. If, however, you have ISA on your SBS there is a situation where it prevents RPC connections, but I would have to search my memory or some old notes to find out what you need to do there.
If you didn't UTFW, then you must set all options by hand, including domain firewall settings and Remote Desktop permissions.

Re: How to connect to a remote computer

Follow the steps for how to remote computer
  1. Install a telnet program (client) on your computer. HyperTerminal, included with Windows, will perform many telnet operations. You can also locate an array of freeware, shareware or commercial telnet clients from various software Web sites.
  2. Open your telnet program.
  3. Enter the telnet address in the address box. Click OK.
  4. Enter your login ID. If you have been given special permission, your host will have provided you with a login ID. If it is an anonymous site, you may be able to log in as "guest" or by using your e-mail address.
  5. Once you are logged in, the procedure varies depending on how the host has been set up. Follow instructions that appear on the screen.
