Windows XP - LAN networking problem

I have 2 Computers at my place both are running on the Windows XP professional edition and I wanted to work them on LAN for file sharing and gaming through my Linksys (Model #BEFSR41) Ethernet router.

A few days ago I installed the Link-Layer Topology Discover (LLTD) Responder on one the machine from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/922120. It showed my another computer on it until I restarted the computer. Then it went missing i tried reinstallation of LLTD but no change. Both computers are in the same workgroup with the same account name neither account has a password.

Can anyone help?

Re: Windows XP - LAN networking problem

Go to Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center.

Under Sharing and Discovery, leave File Sharing 'On' and turn Public Folder Sharing 'Off'.

Also make sure Windows firewall has an Exception set for File and Printer sharing.

I have UAC on and share successfully with XP machines using the above settings.

On your XP pc.
  • Go to System Properties > Computer name tab
  • Check that workgroup is set to the same
  • Go to Network Connections page and verify you're in the same IP range for both PCs.
  • Verify firewall has allowed for file sharing operations (and whatever else you need)
  • Share any folders by right clicking it and going to "Share"

The Link Layer Topology Discovery (LLTD) responder. The network map on a computer running Windows Vista shows a graphical view of the computers and devices on your network and how they are connected by using the LLTD protocol. The LLTD responder must be installed on a computer running Windows XP before it can be detected and appear on the network map. After you install this item, you may have to restart your computer.

I suggest you that download the LLTD again and try to install it on your computer, that is a fresh installation, here is link.
