Yes you can share external hard drive.
Filesharing requires 4 basic things i.e. Network connectivity, Firewall permissions, NTFS Permissions, and Sharing Permissions.
To share your hard drive:
- Go to My Computer
- right click on your external drive
- Open Properties
- Press Sharing Button
- Go to Advanced Sharing
- Check the box for "share this folder"
- Go to "Permissions" in the same window
- Allow "Full Control" for everyone
- Then Press OK
Done!
If you have problem in accessing your drive then try mapping the remote network drive to a drive letter.

You have to find the IP address of the new NAS (network attached storage). Simple way without scanning your network:
- Log on to your router (gateway to the internet)
- look at the clients tab / DHCP leases tab (Depends on the type of router you have but essentially it will tell you the IP address of all devices on your network that the router has given out)
- connect to the NAS by typing in - \\192.168.0.X (whatever the IP is) then it should ask you to authenticate. Depending on the NAS you have you may need to use a web browser to do this. Consult the directions on the NAS device you purchased for the best method to connect and default password.
- Change the network attached storage password and make sure you write it down for future reference and safety.
