I have done this numerous times myself, as I am a Network Administrator... what are your computers? As in, are they Desktops, or Laptops? Also, are you planning on wireless connections?

Hey i'm using Desktops. No idea about wireless connections. Is wire connection considered to be more secure one? Can you please give me more details on it?

Use a cross cable for the connection and put the 2 pc under the same work group. And finally, add the id below configuration to id LAN of the 2 system.

I think router is the best solution for your answer.

Instead plugging the modem in to your usb port, try to get a modem with an ethernet interface.

You can also go for a switch connection, it is also a good choice after router or modem is conern.

Both can be secured. Even if you use a Wireless Connection, you can still secure your connection so that no one else can have access to "free-load" off you're internet connection. It is better to use wireless if your computers are going to be in different locations of your home.
