    Exclamation Unidentified Network

    PLEASE HELP IF YOU KNOW

    Hi,

I have 2 computers, both using Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

    Let's make this easier

    _______________________________
1 computer is in the (1st room)
the 2nd computer is in the (2nd room)
    _______________________________

(1st room has the cable internet)
(2nd room has internet connecting from 1st room)

ok Ive got the internet running and all ok in the (1st room) using it now as i speak...

now the problem is (2nd room) can access ("my network places" shared folders) but it cannot access the internet

(1st room) can access ("network places" shared folders) & it shows in "network and sharing center" that (2nd room) is "Unidentified network"

I've tried everything to solve this problem, even searched on google... seems like everyone has problems but they use wiresless. i use Ethernet cable.

if i go to (1st room) and go to Start > Run > cmd.exe > then type ipconfig /all it shows

    C:\Users\MimoHoda>ipconfig /all

    Re: Unidentified Network

So you are having Vista installed on your both computers (correct me if I am wrong). Could you give the result of "ipconfig /all" of the 2nd room's computer. Also did you tried "ping" from both the end (on both computer) to each other to check whether the connection was perfectly set up. Can you post the result of those pings. How are those computers connected (modem/switch/router) (brand/model) ?

    Re: Unidentified Network

    Hi,

So The computer in Room 1 have 2 Cables connnected, 1 to the modem and the other goes to the computer in Room 2, Am i Right?

You will have to enable ICS on Computer 1.
    Refer to http://www.windowsreference.com/wind...etup-in-vista/

    Re: Unidentified Network

As you can see the result for "ipconfig /all" for 2nd room computer, there is no IP address is assigned to that computer. So you are getting "Unidentified network". If you are using a single modem and single connection then you should set up your computer's as suggested by fradual. Otherwise you can also go for some switch to get your internet connection shared among two or more computers.

For ping, see this: How to Ping?

    Re: Unidentified Network

How do I share my Internet connection with more than one computer?
If you have a broadband connection to the Internet (DSL service or a cable modem), then you already have a fast enough connection to share with multiple computers. For more information please check the link....

For more information on Internet Connection Sharing (ICS), you can also visit the following link and it contains problem-solving information related to ICS:

    Re: Unidentified Network

Here's a solution that I arrived at on another thread:

    Unidentified Network

    Maybe it will help you.

    - Network 1: Shared internet connection to Verizon Wireless using my tethered Palm Treo and Vista Internet connection sharing (ICS)

    - Network 2: LAN card connected to a Buffalo router being used as a network switch and wireless access point

The ICS works fine. It sets the LAN card IP address to 192.168.0.1 and enables DHCP, which assigns IP addresses to other computers on the network.

The problem is with network 2 which, when ICS is enabled, shows up as an unidentified network that I cannot rename. By default, unidentified networks are public in Vista, which means that network discovery is off and I can't see the other computers on the network. At this point I can do one of two things: (1) I can change this unidentified network to a private network which enables me to see other computers, but when I restart the computer this connection reverts back to public and I have to reset it. Or (2), I can enable network discovery in the "Sharing and Discovery" section of the "Network and Sharing" window, but this enables network discovery for all public networks -- which I do not want to do, since I sometimes use this computer in public locations.

The solution that worked for two users above -- setting the gateway to the IP address of the computer (which for me is 192.168.0.1, the IP address assigned by ICS) -- did not work for me. Vista kept reverting back to blanks in the gateway IP address.

[If you're not familiar with how to change IP addresses, simply right click on the connection in the "Network Connections" window, which you can get to from the Network and Sharing window by clicking on "Manage Network Connections," then choose "Properties" and double click on "Internet Protocol Version 4."]

The solution that did work for me, which I was led to by thinking about this thread, was setting the gateway to the (fixed) IP address of the wireless access point to which my computer is connected. Success! Now Vista identifies the network and I can rename it and choose a private status.

[This solution may require you to set a fixed IP address for the access point, which you can do through the setup pages of your access point. I use 192.168.0.101. I actually have another Buffalo router connected to the same network to extend my wireless coverage, which has the IP address 192.168.0.102. Wireless laptops, a second hardwired desktop and a hardwired network printer get their IP addresses from the computer with the shared connection, which acts as a DHCP server.]
