My internet connection works perfectly and i can surf but when I follow all the steps that microsoft says to do i still cannot connect to xbox live. It always stops on IP address even though it is the only item on the network besides by one computer

Before you try anything else go to your network settings and hit restore to factory defaults then try to connect to live. Sometimes this works and you can then get on.

Now if your ethernet is coming from a router that is also hooked up to your computer go to Start -> Run -> type CMD -> OK. There type in ipconfig/all. You will get 'Physical Address' there. Write it down go to your xbox and go to edit your network settings and find where it says alternate mac address. Type in the physical address there and then test your connection it should work.

If your ethernet is coming straight from your modem turn your xbox on go to your modem and there should be a reset button somewhere on the back of it push that and wait a minute while it reboots. (If you do this make sure no one is on the phone because it will kick them off). This should then reset your modem to recognize your xbox. Good luck, hope this helps.
