Hello

In my experience if you configure the nic to use DHCP, you can't also add a static IP. If DHCP fails, the default is to use an APIPA address (169.254.0.0/16).
The recommended approach is to use hardware profiles. 1 profile for home and 1 profile for work.
The best option is to use a wireless switch/router give the switch/router the static IP and each of your machines a private IP (e.g. 192.168.1.xx).
- Assign both laptops a static IP address on the same network
Laptop1 IP address 192.168.0.2 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Laptop2 IP address 192.168.0.3 Subnet mask 255.255.255.0- You should not have to assign a DNS address for the transfer
- Verify that both Laptops are on the same workgroup.
- Attach the crossover cable to both laptops
- Start the "Easy Transfer Wizard" on the Vista laptop and follow the on screen directions, when asked for a connection type choose "Other" then "Network"
- once the tranfer is compleate be sure to change your network setting back to the previous settings (i.e. old static IP or DHCP)
