VPN connections use the connectivity of the Internet plus a combination of tunneling and data encryption technologies, such as the Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), like the one in your case, and Layer Two Tunneling Protocol with Internet Protocol security (L2TP/IPSec), to connect remote clients and remote offices.

PPTP VPN client comes native with all Windows XP. PPTP uses TCP port 1723 and IP Protocol 47. It's not normally possible to forward IP 47 traffic with port forwarding. However, you may find that by forwarding TCP 1723 it opens up GRE automatically. I've seen this on some routers. Otherwise you're stuck with the DMZ option. You can secure this using Input and Output filters within RRAS to block unwanted traffic.

The drawback of using it is that user authentication completely depends on password, hence the security of the network depends on good user passwords.
