Symantec Announces 2009 range of its security software, consisting of Norton Antivirus and Norton Internet Security. For these new versions, Symantec said its focus on the speed of software and their low impact on the level of performance. Rowan Trollope, vice president of the division of the general public editor, made a priority: "We wanted to change the perception of security software from users who see them as bulky, heavy and slow. We tried to reduce this impact to zero, and not simply be faster than our competitors, but to be the fastest." For this, Symantec claims that it has revised its copy from the installation, whose procedure was created to zero, taking particular example on the simplicity of Mac OS X in this area (as the own admission of Rowan Trollope).

The main novelty versions 2009, is the Norton Insight Technology. Based on gathering information from users of the product, a "safe and anonymous, based on MD5 signatures," Norton Insight draw up a list of files scanned to exclude files automatically deemed safe during the analysis, which accelerates the latter. Norton Insight Technology is also helping to heuristic scanning engine to reduce the number of false positives by comparing a heuristic scanning the maximum level with the base signature files scanned by users.

Like most of its competitors, the range of Norton 2009 also gets a "silent" triggered automatically when launching an application in full screen mode (games, movies, PowerPoint presentations ...), referring alerts so as not to disturb the user. The analyses are initiated during periods of inactivity on the computer, like what is done in Norton 360. The protection of browsers is improved, particularly with regard to Mozilla Firefox, which boasts a new module using technology Canary. Rowan Trollope has also said that Symantec will offer protection for Google Chrome browser if Google is gaining popularity. Finally, we note the more frequent updates of the database of signatures (Symantec announced a period of 5 minutes) and a new redesign of the interface. Norton Antivirus 2009 and Norton Internet Security 2009 are marketed under the respective price of 34.99 euros and 64.99 euros. The evaluation versions, currently in English and limited to 15 days of use, are available for download.
