How to stop a Virus attacking your machine?

I am a noob. I want to know what are the different tools available to protect your computer from virus attack?
Please help me I am confused between Virus, spyware, malware & adware?

The best way to protect your computer from Virus attack is to have a good antivirus program installed on your system & update it regularly. There are many free antivirus programs also!
Purchase and/or Download an Anti-Virus program to spot viruses.
Let me tell you about the basic differences between
1)Virus - a piece of malicious software infesting your computer
2)Spyware - malicious software that records you activies for purposes of annoying you or stealling money etc.
3)Adware - non-malicious but annoying software that records you're browsing habits and send to web to try an dpersuade you to part with you rmoney on crap goods
4)Malware: Malware are malicious software that affects the normal functionality of your system. Sometimes, annoying pop up will appear out of no where to direct you to some sales sites. Sometimes emails spams will automatically be sent from your system. Adware and spyware progress to a malicious state if it start to affect the use of your system actively instead of just showing you passive advertisement.
