Remote Network Access

I want to assist my business set up remote file access. Users should be able to access and manipulate files on the work network remotely and have accessed to a shared repository.

A number of employees will be accessing the network from foreign countries, including some 3rd world countries.

Security is important.

From what I've read, it seems that setting up a VPN is what I'm looking for. Is that correct? Are there simpler sollutions that will not put too much strain on the IT department? What should know about?

I know only the VPN way of accessing the Network. Where I work, only VPN is being used for years and the security is very good. But its for accross India only. Dont have idea about world wide network.

So in my view, setting up VPN for remote access is so far the usual and simplest method
