I can't open .gif or .jpg files in email attachments

I am using Office 2007 on Vista operating system. Incoming attachments to email messages with .jpg or .gif extensions will not open, even though I have associated Paint with both of these files. Is there some kind of special issues with the Attachments to email. I have disabled Norton Security thinking that it was trying to protect me but the same issue happens again. Any help

Have you tried to save the attachments to a temp folder and then open them again?
