Very slow file saving in Office 2003

    Hi there,

I use Windows XP and Office 2003. Recently I have noticed Office (in
particular Word) is very very slow in opening and saving files etc. When you
get the drop down 'Browse' menu up it can take several minutes to respond.
Does anyone know why? As I say this has only happened over the last few
weeks, it didn't used to be so slow. I had a look at previous posts, but
they all really mention networked computers - mine is standalone (using it at
    home).

    Thanks!

    Louise

Open My Computer, is there any drives there that are "disconnected" or
"Unavailable"? If so, right click on them and select "Disconnect" to
    remove the issue.

Re: Very slow file saving in Office 2003

    Hi!

No, I don't think so... How would I tell though? As I say, I amn't
networked at the moment. I went into Tools -> Disconnect Network Drive and
got the message 'You have no network drives to disconnect'.

There ARE drives listed which don't actually exist at the moment though -
for example 'Removable Disc (J:) - when I try to double click on that it says
'Please insert a disk into Drive J'. I can't see anyway to disconnect that
    though...

Could that be part of the problem?

    Thanks again,

    Louise

No, the "drives" would be visible in My Computer with a Red X on them.

perhaps you have been editing files on "J"? That does seem to be a
rather "high" letter for a local drive. What is it?

Re: Very slow file saving in Office 2003

Bob, I went through your answers. in fact, there would be two kinds of
"slow", one is slow to show the drive letter in "save as" window, the other
is slow in "saving" or "converting to 2003 version". these are two different
    situation.
I am facing the second problem, even after I disabled Norton auto protection
function. could you offer more clue? thank you!

Given your statement, "converting to 2003 version", this sounds like a
completely different situation in your case. I Suggest you start a new
thread, stating particulars, versions of Office involved and any
updates, add-ons and exactly the problem you are experiencing.

sorry Bob, I don't exactly understand what you mean. now I save a 60-page
file in PPT format cost around 7 minutes, there must be something wrong.

Re: Very slow file saving in Office 2003

Start a new thread, do not "piggy-back" onto and existing thread. Your
problem is not the same as the original stated problem. When you start
your question state it in a NEW question, NOT as a reply in this thread.
Be sure that when you ask you also mention any particulars, versions of
Office involved and any updates, add-ons and exactly the problem you are
    experiencing.
