Had a the same problem too

Open word, bottom left is your input language, mine was Irish(Ireland)

got to Review, set language, and you'll see you default language highlighted in blue, if your language doesn't have ABC with a check mark under it (scroll down the list of languages and you'll see others with it) then your spell check won't work.

Excel's work's because the dictionary was set by default to English(UK)

You can either do the same in word or check the region and language setting in control panel and make sure that isn't overriding your word language.

I'm Irish so You'll have figure out which languages you should be using.

    1) First you need to open a Microsoft Word document
    2) Click the MOB (Microsoft Office Button) at the top left corner
    3) At the bottom of that menu is a button labeled "Word Options" (it's next to "Exit Word")
    4) On the left side is a list. Click "Add-Ins"
    5) At the bottom of this menu there is a small box next to the word Manage
    6) Click that box and select "Disabled Items" from the list
    7) Once you have selected this click the "Go" next to it
    8) A new window will open and if on of the options has the words "Spell Check" then select this
    9) Once the option is selected then proceed with clicking Enable.
    10) Close the "Word Options" menu and proceed to type an obvious misspelled word to test it.

    Thanks to Aron for this.

Re: Word 2007 Spell Check Issues

I'm no tech guru but can tell how I resolved the problem without making registry changes.

    Open Microsoft Word 2007
Click on the Windows Icon in upper left corner
Click on Word Option in lower section of new window
Click on Add-Ins from option list
Go to bottom of new window. Look for "manage".
Select Disabled Items from drop down list.
    Click Go.
If Spell Check has been disabled by WORD, it will appear in the box in the new window.
Click it to highlight. Then click Enable.
You may now click Close and exit all the way out of this.
Close Word. Reopen. Spell check now worked for me,

Re: Word 2007 Spell Check Issues

I had the same problem. I did all the above solutions. None of them worked. Then I went to control panel, right clicked the Microsoft office program and clicked Change. Then did the repair option. Restarted computer and spell check worked.
