Office 2007 slow to open files from mail and other application

I am using Windows XP Pro SP2 64 bit. I installed Office 2007. There was a issue that appeared some 6 months before and now it appeared suddenly again. When I open any file directly from email or other application Office takes lot of time to load. This problem appeared me long ago when I had upgraded from Office 2003. While it works fine if I open a docx or xlsx file through double clicking on it. I am getting lots of emails in which maximum are having word files. When I click on it to open the system freezes for some minutes.

The issue lies with program access defaults. I even face that. But it was fixed automatically. I am not exactly sure what I did. After running Diagnostic from help menu it looks to be working fine. You must also do the same. Run office diagnostic and then check once again. Another way is to go in control panel and recheck whether program access default is configured properly or not. Just set the default extension for default application and try again.

This page has helped in that I can now open files, but I still have a couple of questions:
1. What is the root cause of the problem
2. Is it strictly a Windows XP issue?
3. I have been running MSO 2007 for 18 months. Why did this behaviour only begin to present itself in the last few days?
4. If MSFT knows about this issue, why hasn't it been corrected?

Try to run a repair setup of Microsoft Office and then check back. You can do that using a cd or directly from the control pane. A repair setup can fix ample of issues. I always run that when Office Diagnostic does not help much.
