message "xls is locked for editing by ---" accessing excel workbook

We have started getting the message: ".xls is locked for editing by ------"
when we try to enter into a shared excel workbook. We have verified that
none of the authorized users already have the document open. It is
imperative that we coirrect this problem ASAP.

Is the XLS saved on SharePoint? If so, you could save a local copy, verify
that it is not corrupted in some way, then re-upload the file to SharePoint,
    overwriting the locked version.

No. It is stored on a shared but isolated server at our Bureau, with limited
access to only our group of six personnel. I am attempting to rebuild the
workbook now, but I have copious hyperlinks to restore from within the
    workbook. Need a better fix.

Are you able to open a read-only version of the original, or are you unable
    to open it at all?

We are able to open a read only version, which makes it look like another
user is in the file.. however that is not the case.

I would then try just saving the read only version locally, then opening it
locally and seeing if you can edit that local copy. If so, then copy it back
to the server. If you are also unable to delete the inexplicably locked
version, save it back up with a new name.

Try uploading a test excel sheet with little of nothing in it and see
    if it opens correctly.
I'd also like to make sure you are opening from the dropdown and not
clicking the file to open from the site.
Please let us know what you find, BTW - I am having the same issue.

Based on my experience - that file is open somewhere and it may be that the
machine it was opened on has hung onto it even though excel does not appear
to be running. My suggestion is to check the task manager of the machines -
if you see excel running kill the process - if you do not see it reboot all
the desktops that have access to that file and see if that clears it.

    good luck

I am having same issue. There is no shared workbook. It is not open by
any user. It is not running in the background. This comes up almost
weekly. It is becoming majorily frustrating.
