Excel 2007 slow to open 2003 files

When I double-click on an Excel 2003 (.xls) file, Excel 2007 takes a long
time (30 seconds) to open the file. I can avoid this delay by minimizing
Excel at which point it immediately maximizes itself and opens the file.

thanks for the tip, I'm having the exact same problem. Is there a
permanent fix for this?

Yet another twist. A few days ago (a week after installing Office 2007),
..xls files starting opening in Excel 2003 again by default.

Same thing here. Didn't know about the minimize thing but it works. I'll try
filemon and regmon to see if I can find anything weird.

It is just really annoying. I first noticed it when I tried to open an
attachment from Outlook and thought that was the problem. Then when I saved
it to my hard drive, it still took a long time to open.

I'll let you know what I find out.

Do either of you have any addins installed? I had 2 and when I removed them
both, it started to work like normal.

What I found out: Open Excel 2007 first, then use CTRL+O to OPEN the needed
file. In my case newer and older Excel files are experiencing the 30 second
wait...

I disabled the office live plugin and now it appears to be open fast again.

circle office button > settlings > plugins > go on com type > uncheck
