Follow the below steps to solve the issue that you are facing:

1. First of all you need to open Microsoft Office Communicator and click "Tools" at the top of the window.
2. After that try to choose "Options" in the drop-down menu.
3. Now, you have to click on the "Instant Message" tab at the top of the "Options" box, then select "Show emoticons in instant messages."
4. After that you need to right-click on a message where you want to add an emoticon and click "Insert Emoticon."
5. Lastly, you have to click on the emoticon you want to use and it will appear in the location where you right-clicked. Send this message as you normally would.
