| Office 2000 crashing after a week on Windows 2003 Std / Citrix PS4
Hi, We've got Office 2000 SR-1 SP3 installed on a Windows 2003 SP1 / Citrix PS4 citrix server. All runs well for around a week after installation, after which Word, Excel and Powerpoint fail to start. No splash screen or anything - I see the process appear in task manger, then immediately dump report is generated [see below] Access 2000 and Outlook 2003 continue to run unaffected. All the latest OfficeUpdate updates have been applied. Repairing Office does not fix the problem; reinstalling does fix it for another week or so. Dump report as follows (example below is Word; Excel and Powerpoint create exactly the same reports). I would check the svchost.exe first. See what version is resident. Might want to run your AV,AdAware,Spybot,Hijackthis,CWShredder in Safe mode. This is after seeing your dump as you posted it -- Peter Please Reply to Newsgroup for the benefit of others Requests for assistance by email can not and will not be acknowledged. | Re: Office 2000 crashing after a week on Windows 2003 Std / Citrix
Hi Peter, Thanks for the help. The svchost.exe is version 5.2.3790.1830, this is consistent with other Windows 2003 SP1 servers we have. I've run the AV, spyware etc tools, only tracking cookies were found, so this won't have made any difference to Office. I guess it's a matter of 'hurry up and wait' to see if it happens again, but after 3 previous recurrences I'm not too hopeful that it's been fixed. Thanks again for your help, will let you know how things go. Cheers, Mike "Peter Foldes" wrote: > I would check the svchost.exe first. See what version is resident. Hi Mike I run a similar setup to yours: Citrix PS4/W2K3 with Outlook 2003/Office 2000 and I ran into the same situation. Two questions - 1. Can you run the applications when you boot into Safe Mode? I could - which gave me a clue, so..... 2. What else have you installed recently? Mine turned out to be Adobe Acrobat 7.0.5. Once I removed that the applications worked again in normal mode. I hope this helps and let me know if you have solved your problem and whether is was the same issue or not in the end. cheers sE |

| Re: Office 2000 crashing after a week on Windows 2003 Std / Citrix
Hi sE, Indeed, Safe Mode seems to run Office 2k fine. This does, as you suggest, imply something else is causing problems. The server was recently upgraded from Citrix PS3, during which all installed software updated to the latest. This does include Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0.5, which was only version 6.?? pre-upgrade. I'm waiting for recurrence at the moment [and hoping I wait for a long time], but will let you know if it happens again and what effect uninstalling Acrobat Reader had. Thanks for the help! | Re: Office 2000 crashing after a week on Windows 2003 Std / Citrix PS4
Hi Mike I have now found the real culprit! On the server I had the problem on, when I re-installed Adobe 7.05 and it's the Standard Version not just the reader, the problem did not come back straight away, but it did about 3 days later. It also occurred on two other of my servers with the same configuration. Removing Adobe temporarily fixed the problem each time I have now discovered that it is the Citrix Virtual Memory Optimization Service that is causing the problem. If I stop this then Office runs fine straight away without making any changes to Adobe. This is better but I was planning on using this feature so I am hoping that they will fix this problem. It could be to do with having two versions of office sharing similar named DLL's and the Optimizer is cutrting it down to one only. I may have to stop it operating on one version of Office - which is a pain! cheers sE |
