perhaps, the file associations are not correct. open explorer, click on tools, click on folder options, then click on the file type tab. search those extensions you provided and ensure that they are set to open with the appropriate program and the accurate location of the .exe out of curiosity, I checked my own .doc extension. clicking on its "advance" button and then clicking on the edit button for the "Open" action I have the following: Action: &Open Application used...: "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office12\WINWORD.EXE" /n /dde Use DDE [checked] DDE Message [REM _DDE_Direct][FileOpen("%1")] Application WinWord DDE App...Not Running ...{empty/blank} Topic System ---------------- so if your word .exe file is located in its default location like mine is, then when you click / open ..doc files, winword.exe should initiate afterwards. |

not sure as to why you don't. follow the instructions here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307859 then let us know if you still have a problem. Download the compatibility pack from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en You could download various VIEWERS for Office 2007. Search for them on MS website. |

then open the registry and delete the file types. then re do them as per the kb. click start>run> regedit then do a search for .html via the menu bar. the sample extension will take you to the tree where all the branches are to the file types. then go to .doc and delete the keys, then exit and reboot. (do just one ext at this time to test the methodology.) now double click on a doc file and see what happens. if no program initiates, then this is the opportunity to associate the doc ext to the winword.exe program via the file types method. use the the data I provided in the earlier posting to create the open command for the doc file types. afterwarrds double click on a doc file and if word opens, then you have proven the method above as viable and you can proceed to change the other ext's as well. on the other hand if clicking on a doc file still opens the wrong program, then perhaps your office program can be said to be hijacked. |

if you deleted the doc key, then it is not weird that the doc files don't open when you click on them. that was the point of deleting the file association. now, go into the file types via the explorer. if you scroll down the listing of extensions, there shouldn't be one for doc because you deleted in the registry. so now re-create the doc extension in file types. be sure to create a new extension and name it: ..doc you can use the extension for docx as an example. after you make the new doc extension, then go into the advance settings and create a new action named: &open then edit/program the new action command with the data that I sent to you. I don't remember if you said you had office 2003 or 2007. but this is the place where you will link the open command to your winword.exe. then save/close and test the opening of doc files by clicking on them. if you did the above correctly, when you click on a .doc file, it will open winword.exe and the file should too. |

well that is a good sign because now those particular files are no longer accessible by that "odd" program. so now you can re program the files to open with the correct program. ------------------------- what you can do is to open the explorer find any file with the extensions you mentioned then right click on the file select "open with" and assigned/associate a program to that file type. also look for the check box that indicates "always" use the program for that file. incidentally, I would manually find the program to assign the file types, instead of choosing it from the listing. this way you can be absolutely positive that the correct program is assigned to the file. the problem may be that if you select the program from the convenient listing, it too may be linked to the undesired program, which will revert you back to square one with the problem. |

it is confusing because I'm not really sure where the "oem hybrid" comes from. if hp didn't provide it to you then, it seems to me that you should contact the sellers who provided you with that oem hybrid for instructions on how to select and activate the particular version of office you want. can you provide me with the link for the source of your oem hybrid? |

no problem. it is a confusing issue you have. so correct me if I don't understand the following: at this time your laptop does not have office student or office professional installed. however, when you click on an office file, the installation process is initiated for the "hybrid" version but the mso files/folder cannot be found on the disk. there should be a folder on the drive called mso and it would have all the student office setup files that setup cannot locate. --------------------- what I would do is to double check "services" via admin tools and ensure that the service for "office source engine" and "microsoft office diagnostic" services are enabled. perhaps if they are disabled then this may be a problem. ------------------------ another thing to try it to go ahead and reinstall the student office version on the laptop since it was functional and you did not have this issue pertaining to setup. you may be able to use a system restore point to restore those system files. or perhaps you may even consider a factory restore to get the machine back to its original and functional state. ( but if you do, then be sure to copy or move your personal files off the disk or they will be wiped away. you can upload 25gigs for free up to microsofts skydrive server.) ------------------ then you can install office pro on the laptop into a different folder/directory. you will have two functioning office's but then you won't have the problem with setup. then we can work on having the student version removed. ------------------- there is yet one more option. if your office professional is new and a retail version, then you are entitled for direct technical support from microsoft at any time after purchase. this would be an ideal manner to have the issue resolved because it may be a bug "they" have to fix and document. --------------------- let me now what you think with the above options. |

At the moment, i use the office for small business that my father borrow me, because i though its was my profession the problem... i don't have Professionnel and Student anymore. I can use office by opening it or dragging&dropping office's files on office appropriate shortcut (like .xls on Excel shortcut) but when i double click on a file (like .xls) there is like a installation of professionel Hybrid 2007 that start for like 5-10 seconds then i get a error message telling me that my file path is incorrect and then the office application start blank. i tried "Microsoft office diagnotic" but it found no problem, i search "office source engine" in my research bar in my "startUp" and i found ose.exe, but when i click on it, nothing happened (i tried few times) i tried to reinstall student office version, but i didn't find how to... it changed absolutly nothing... but thank for trying :) i had about 1500 keys that needed a repair.. but after the repair, i still not able to open my files... |

have you ran a registry cleaner yet? go ahead and download the run the freeware called "eusing" it will reconcile the registry keys to the physical files on the disk. any keys which don't have any files on the disk are known as "orphaned" keys and they need to be removed. the issue with "hybrid" is that it is still in the registry and referencing files on the disk, which are no longer there. so run "eusing" and lets cross our fingers. |
