MS office: No pre-installed software but pre-installed key

Hi,
Sorry if this is a basic question. Recently I bought a PC without MS Office, then I purchased MS Office professional.By mistake I purchased the a product key that will only activate pre-installed MS Office versions.
Activating the trial software from the MS site did not work with my product key. Is there any way to get a version of Office that I can activate with the key I purchased, or have I just wasted quite a bit of money?
I really appreciate your help!
Thanks,
Esther

From where did you purchase the product key?
If you purchased from Digital River you would have been directed to the
appropriate Office download file, with which you install Office (Having
first uninstalled any trial)

Re: MS office: No pre-installed software but pre-installed key

Hi DL,
Thanks for your post.
I purchased the key from www.dabs.com - an electronic online shop. They did not give me any info.
What do you think I should do?
Thanks,
Esther

Contact your bank and dispute the charge.

Re: MS office: No pre-installed software but pre-installed key

Thanks JoAnn,

Is this what I need to do? Is there no way to get hold of the correct CDs or the correct download, so I can use the key I purchased?

Thanks,

Esther

Re: MS office: No pre-installed software but pre-installed key

Then return the key/purchase to dabs, under the Distance Selling regs
What you purchased was an OEM Media free licence key
What you need to purchase is either a boxed retail edition of Office or
boxed OEM edition
You should take care to purchase the particular version required, you may
qualify for an upgrade edition, depending if you have qualifying software.

NB It *may be* if you downloaded the trial that is the *exact same version*
as the OEM key you purchased the key may work - However I dont know
sufficient about Media free keys
You should contact dabs support - I've allways found them OK

If I spent that kind of mony, I'd make sure I got the disks in hand. OEMs
are limited to the system and I suspect your seller is walking a fine line
between what's legal and what isn't.

Re: MS office: No pre-installed software but pre-installed key

Esther didn't state exactly which product she bought but I am thinking one
of the Medialess License Kits for System Builders. There should have been a
message like this one on the web site:

"PLEASE NOTE: No discs are included in this package. This package contains a
product key that will activate a full version of this software on a
Microsoft Office-ready PC only. The product key will not activate any volume
license installation or other 2007 Microsoft Office suite."

A "Microsoft Office-ready PC" is a PC that has been pre-loaded with a
package available to system builders. It doesn't cost anything to register
as a system builder or to get the Microsoft Office-ready PC software, but it
is somewhat complicated.

Esther, if you post exactly which license you bought perhaps you can get
more detailed information. What I posted above is only one possible
scenario.

JoAnn it is perfectly legal for anyone to buy system builder software or
licenses and install it on their own computer, but as we see here they
really do need to know exactly what they are doing.
