Mapi error when attempting to send as attachment from word/excel

In Word or Excel docs my user gets MAPI error "operation failed" and "general
mail failure" when attempting to SendAs (attachment). It also tells you to
restart Word after saving the document, and it should work. It does not. I
have checked the win.ini file as well as the registry, and found both had the
correct info.

This is a Windows XP Pro sp 3 computer, with Office 2003 (small business)
and Publisher 2007.

Nothing I have found on a general web search has corrected the problem, yet
it appears to be a fairly common issue. I was unsuccessful in finding
anything useful in the MS Knowledgebase. Any ideas?
Thanks

Perhaps this?

Re: Mapi error when attempting to send as attachment from word/exc

Ok, this didnt work. However it helped me pinpoint exactly what is happening.
Here is the process. I brought up Word. Then brought up task mgr. I
originally was looking for process mapisp32. Not there. (no other apps opened
at this time) so I open a document and click file, send to, as attachment..
it worked...I watched an Outlook process come up when I did this. I also
noted that the outlook process did not go away after the email was sent. I
tried again... it failed... so I ended the outlook process, tried it again,
and it worked.. So I started up Outlook and saw two Outlook processes
running... tried several variations of ending processes, and attempting to
send, and confirmed that as long as the Outlook process that is put in by
Word sending the doc is still running I get the mapi error. I ran another
detect and repair.. and also a Windows "sfc /scannow" command to see if it
was a Windows corruption, but no change

SO now I know the problem is that the Outlook process does not quit when it
should. Now I need to know how to correct that problem... any ideas?

Re: Mapi error when attempting to send as attachment from word/exc

Interfering security software is the cause of Outlook not closing. Sort
that, and Outlook will close.
