| Problem with ink in Word 2007
Odd problem. I'm trying to mark up some documents in Word 2007 (all are ..docx). In some, the Review | Start Ink works and I can scribble. In some, the ink feature doesn't work. Pressing the Start Ink button does nothing. This is happening in about half of 15 documents. All of the files started out from the same file - students had to format and correct the document. I can't find anything different about the files that keeps ink from working; the problematic files can otherwise be edited via mouse or keyboard actions. Using a Gateway M280 tablet, XP Pro/Tablet Edition w/SP3, Word 2007 w/SP1. Thoughts????? Val |

Hi Val, If you open one of the problem documents and go to Office Button=>Prepare is the 'Mark as Final' button lit? If so, click it to reenable the document and see if that makes a difference. Does Ink work in MS One Note 2007? Does Inking work if you start a new document in Word? Is the cursor in a regular text area rather than on a graphic or object? If you start Word in safe mode (hold ctrl key when starting) and then open one of the 'problem' documents do you get the same behavior. =============== <<"Val" <vmanes@NOSPAMrap.midco.net> wrote in message news:vO6dndUdiZ49o2zVnZ2dnUVZ_g6dnZ2d@midco.net... Hi Gordon, Unlike the recent past versions of Word that included the ability to use Ink annotation as part of the Office feature set, http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...342051033.aspx http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/he...332041033.aspx http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/wo...930951033.aspx the option for Office 2007 is more restrictive, being tied to having a tablet device, or being inside a drawing canvas for some of the features http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917652 outside of OneNote. It's one of those features for which the underlying capability was returned to the Windows folks from the Office folks for the 2007 products. Microsoft Research has an interesting Tablet PC toy they're experimenting with for Office http://research.microsoft.com/InkSeine/index.html ============ <<"Gordon" <gordonbparker@yahoo.com.invalid> wrote in message news:%23QawBPDLJHA.1556@TK2MSFTNGP03.phx.gbl...nk feature doesn't work. Bob, Thanks for the tips. Unfortunately, neither worked. The problem documents are not marked as Final. Making them Final, saving, then reopening and reenabling editing does not cure the problem. I'm able to ink in new documents, some of the .docx docs submitted by students, and in the problem docx's when they're converted to 2003 version ..doc. These are all text documents; no graphics, tables, nothing non-textual. Safe mode did not solve this either. | Re: Problem with ink in Word 2007
Still no solution. I found a blog entry about similar problem, but in his case, ink did not work at all in Word and Outlook. His solution was to uninstall Office and reinstall, not turning off any of the default items. It seems that either opting out of some features, or removing them at a later point, "broke" ink. I tried that today, completely unistalled then reinstalled, with all defaults. No change - the files I could not ink before still were uninkable (is that a word?) Still hunting for a root cause or solution. Val "Stephanie" <Stephanie@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:0912A81A-BB58-48A4-B4B4-363248F07F7D@microsoft.com... | Re: Problem with ink in Word 2007
Same problem here - I'm using a Gateway Tablet M285. What I notice is that inking can be started at the top of a .docx, but a few pages down it turns itself off and cannot be restarted. It always happens at the same page, but I cannot find anything different about that page. The work-around is to SAVE AS a .doc - if I do that I can immediately begin inking the document (no need to close and re-open) with no problem. Kind of defeats the purpose of the 2007 version, but... |

I got a reply on another forum from a guy at MS, he'll look into it or pass it to someone more in tune with this problem. Hope to hear something soon. Here's a data point, and a possible work-around: The culprit may be page numbers (maybe other text as well) in the headers or footers. I could not do inking in a couple of .docx documents that had page numbers in the header or footer - turns out that if I delete them, I can ink all I like. I also looked at a couple of documents that did not have page numbers (or anything else in the header/footer) and I had no problem inking on those. |

Holy freakin' software! That does indeed "fix" the problem. Or at least, let's me ink on the documents. $64,000 question - "Why the *&^% does a page number block the ink?" Val, Good question...If you ever hear back from MS, let us know... BTW, I tried putting plain text and (separately) the date format in a header, but that doesn't cause any trouble - it's just the page number thing. Go figure. |

I played with my problem files some more today. If I delete the page numeber field, I can ink. If I delete the page number field, then immediatly insert page number again, I can ink!!! But if I delete the page number field, then undo that deletion, inking won't work. And some of the documents, with page numbers, from the same students, work just fine. I asked the students about the computer setups they used, and there was nothing common - some desktops, some regular laptops, some the school tablet PCs. Most XP, some Vista. Maybe the position of the Moon at the time the files were saved...... "UHLen" <UHLen.3j75vc@DoNotSpam.com> wrote in message news:UHLen.3j75vc@DoNotSpam.com... | Re: Problem with ink in Word 2007
Something I've seen referred to a couple times when ink doesn't work at all is to uninstall Office and reinstall it. If doing so over a network, do it one app at a time to preclude network timeouts causing problems. Once installed, don't uninstall any single components - that too has been attributed with causing ink problems.
