I wish to pair an Asus M2N-VM-DVI with an Athlon 64 X2 4200+. ITW prices peg the two around 3k each, so I should be able to get this in 6k. I have 2G of RAM and 2x320GB RAID0.
Is this a good enough config to run vista with aero?

I think you should get an Intel Core2Duo E8400 instead and OC it. It will wipe the floor with that AMD X2, OC'd or not. Also, if you don't need SLI and take my advice about going Intel, go with a P35 board.
I'm using an Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+.
Good combo, but as T.J. stated, go with Intel. It's a better choice, especially if you plan to overclock and don't need or plan on SLI in the future.
