Intel Core i7 3.70 GHz vs Core i7 Extreme Edition 3.80GHz

Guys I am willing to update my processor, currently It is having Intel Core i5-3210M processor and now I have made up mind for either Intel Core i7 3.70 GHz or Core i7 Extreme Edition 3.80GHz. I liked both of them but I am not sure which one to choose, I am just confused. Can anyone let me know the actual difference between both so I can get the best one?? Help regarding this will be appreciated.

I don’t think there will be much difference between their performances:

Intel Core i7-3920XM Processor Extreme Edition (8M Cache, up to 3.80 GHz):
    Clock Speed- 2.9 GHz
    Max Turbo Frequency- 3.8 GHz
Graphics Max Dynamic Frequency- 1.3 GHz

Intel Core i7-3820QM Processor (8M Cache, up to 3.70 GHz):
    Clock Speed- 2.7 GHz
    Max Turbo Frequency- 3.7 GHz
Graphics Max Dynamic Frequency- 1.25 GHz

I won’t be a good idea in paying $1096 for Intel Core i7-3920XM Processor, rather get Intel Core i7-3820QM Processor for $568.

Even I think the same until you won’t be overclocking your system I don’t think there is any point of getting Core i7-3920XM Processor. Generally there will be negligible difference between their performances. They both are having almost the same specification and features and you will be able to get faster clock speed with both. If you will get Core i7-3820QM then you will be saving handsome amount of money and you can invest the same in updating other components like psu and video card.

See if you don’t mind waiting for some more time then I will suggest you to better get Intel Haswell. It will be releasing between Mar-Jun 2013, I don’t think updating from Intel Core i5-3210M to Core i7-3820QM or Core i7-3920XM will be a good idea. If you are not that in to overclocking then waiting for Haswell will be a much better idea. As far as I am aware Core i5-3210M is a very good processor and you can overclock it easily up to 3.8 gz or 3.9 and attain a stable system without any issue as well. The differences between these processors is just because of their higher clock rates and nothing else, there will be hardy any difference between them until you overclock them. If at all you don’t have any issue for spending on them then you can very well go for Core i7-3820QM. Just to share my system is having Core i5 processor and I am waiting for Haswell to get released. I have talked to a number of experts and even they have suggested me to wait for Haswell.

Thanks for your suggestion guys, I have heard of Haswell but it will be too late if I will be waiting for it to get released. Actually there is something wrong with Core i5 processor that I am currently using in my system, it is getting overheated. I have checked out the cpu cooler and have tried using thermal compound as well but no avail. The processor is getting overheated and the system is turning off automatically every now and then. That’s the reason I am in hurry to get a new processor, anyways I have made up my mind to get Core i7-3820QM. I will utilize the money that I will be saving with it for Haswell later.
