In my computer, My CPU fan is making noise which is more than normal and I think that I need to lubricate the PC fans. I have never done this before and so I thought, it will be better if I can take some advice from you people over here that what is the best way to do this and what are the precautions that one should take while doing this. Please reply. I will be thankful for all the replies for this.

If this is making more noise than my suggestion to you is to change the fan with the new one. Lubricating may reduce the noise but it will not be reduced a lot. If this is the case for me then I would have done the same and so I am recommending you the same.

Here are the steps that you have to follow as written and you can do that without any problem.
    1. Unplug all cables from the computer.
    2. Open the computer case, as instructed by the manufacturer.
    3. Open each of the four corners of the fan screws and remove the fan from the case.
    4. Disconnect the fan power cable.
    5. Look for the label in the center of the fan on one side.
    6. Peel the sticker off slowly until the small round plug completely exposed. Do not pull off the sticker completely.
    7. Snoop the plug to reveal a hole. Within this hole, you will see the bearing of fans.
    8. Drop 1-2 drops of mineral oil in the hole with a pipette.
    9. Spin the fan a few turns with a finger to coat the bearings.
    10. Insert the plug.
    11. Press the label back over the hole. It should stick by itself.
    12. Screw the fan back into the case. Connect the fan power cable.
    13. Close the case and connect all cables.

I have some tip for you. In the above posted steps, you can also make use of the Baby oil which is mineral oil only with fragrance added. It will work just as well. You can also use sewing machine oil. Make sure that you are not using the WD-40. It is not intended for use in situations like this.

It is not for sure that the fan is the only reason for this problem. There sis possibility that it is because of some other hardware failure that is causing the fan to make sound. If you are unsure about this then it will be better to call any engineer and he will do it for you.
