    Games freezes in 24GB RAM and Intel Core i7-920 @4.4 ghz setup

    Following are my system specs:
    • Intel Core i7-920 @4.4 GHz processor
    • ASUS P6T deluxe v2 motherboard
    • Antec Watercooling
    • Thermaltake level 10GT + 1x120 mm bottom
    • 2x GTX 580 SLI
    • 24GBCorsair Vengeance
    • OCZ vertex SSD

    The system seems stable and runs fine with all applications but whenever I try to run games, it freezes. I don’t get any BSOD. It simply freezes and reboots. It seems to me like the issue is with the RAM size, so QPI VTT, maybe RAM voltage. What Should I do to make it stable?

    It seems to me that you have overclocked the CPU to very high level. You need to lower it a bit and see if it still the same. Also you have to re-check the PCI-E clock. It may help you to get back the stability. If the RAM is rated at 1.5, leave it as much. Make sure that the IMC must stay within 0.5v for your RAM voltage otherwise you will run into problem and cause damage to RAM. Also make sure that you have a Quality power supply.

    Do you have good cooling system for your computer?

    Total 6x4GB DDR3 you have then the mix should be as easy. I find that there are 1.5V DDR3 (standard voltage for DDR3 to JEDEC). I would not buy 1.65V and 1.35V. This is because the low voltage will not run on all boards with 1.35V necessarily, but because of the integrated memory controller. I would often rely only at 1.5V.

    You might have installed the 24GB RAM in your computer and the BIOS will also show you the same but Windows cannot release 24GB completely. So it is the Windows problem. Typically, users have tinkered at the MS-config if it's not a BIOS problem. And on the other side you can get at a larger amount of memory problems with the bios when the BCLK tears to high, or the QPI voltage to keep low. And I assume that you have the BCLK pretty high.

    In my case the bios recognize only 20GB. When I ran the Memtest, it detects 20 472 MB. Have also changed the following, but without effect:
    • BCLK 200 -> 130
    • QPI 1.2750 -> 1.2875 V
    • DRAM Voltage 1.51106 (min) to 1.55081

    I still see BIOS update as a possible solution. But still prefer to follow "never change a running system"

    I have seen that many people are having the same kind of problem. The main problem is that, you have concentrated only on RAM and CPU during the system configuration. You have good amount of RAM and powerful processor but you didn’t take a look at the Graphics. I think that your graphic settings are low or might be off.

    Windows 7 32-bit can address up to 4 GB of RAM, which recognizes, but keep in mind that Windows 7 takes over the 4 Gb for all hardware that has the team with what is actually used as the maximum 3.2 GB to 3.5 GB of that memory. To address more than 4 GB we have to go to 64-bit versions, though the pace to this version is really interesting when we have at least 6 or 8 Gb, so we switched to the version carries 64 bits. Windows 7 Home Basic 64bit can use up to 8 GB of memory. Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise 64-bit, the amount of RAM that can handle is raised to 192 GB of RAM.

    That's too much RAM for a PC, but if the motherboard supports up to DDR3-type that size you could say that it can be. You should take a look into the motherboard manual. I think the most that could hold up to 16 GB of RAM. You could try removing 3 sticks and see if the crashes stay or go away. Or try raising voltages one by one, little by little, and see if it goes away.

    The i7 920 is based on Lynnfield architecture which is slightly younger can control up to 24 GB of ram. Did you try downclocking? Do it and see if it is the one causing the crashes. If you don't try you won't find the issue. Bump it back up afterward.

    You might consider placing your graphics settings. Whatever things help you to improve gameplay: the (Night) off Shadow Quality, Texture Quality set to low and reduces resolution. These are, in my opinion, the biggest performance eaters.
