what is the max RAM size for i7-2670QM Memory Controller

Hi , i am looking to get one i7-2670QM for my computer. I have seen official specifications which says that it supports 16 GB RAM, but they said that it will depend on the type of the memory that you are using. Will it be right to consider that it only supports maximum 16 GB of RAM? What will happen if i install more than 16 GB RAM? I have seen some users having more than 16 GB ram, i have seen some users having up to 48 GB of ram on their desktop i7, which were actually only 24 GB ,so it is little confusing to me. Your help is needed.

As the specification for this processor says that it supports 16 GB of RAM, if you install more RAM than that, your processor will only detect first 16 GB of RAM only. The other RAM will not be considered by the CPU.
These motherboards can actually support more memory because they are capable of that. some motherboards with specific chipset like x58 are not capable of supporting more than 24 GB.If motherboard was to support only 24 GB and yet that user could use up to 48 GB of RAM then it looks like manufacturers haven't tested it properly.

For your information , i7-965 was not tested for 8GB of modules because 8GB modules were not released for desktop computers. i7-965 is reported to be supporting DDR3 1066Mhz RAM but many users are using RAM of more frequencies . This may be the case for the Intel i7-2670QM. Developers might not checked this processor for more amount of memory.
