What is the maximum memory for mobile Intel i5 and Intel i7 processor?

Hi, i am looking for a laptop or notebook with 16 GB RAM which can be used for OS virtualization and some future applications. When contacted to Dell they said that if i can use i7 processor with the high end graphics card then i can use up to 12 GB of RAM. I want to know the maximum RAM support for
    • i5-2410M
    • i5-2520M
    • i7-2630QM

And if there are any mobile other processors that can support 16 GB of RAM for laptop then you can suggest me those!

Here is the link that can tell you the specifications of the processors that supports 16 GB of RAM:

    http://ark.intel.com/products/family/59136

i7-2920XM , i7-2820QM, i7-2720QM, i7-2717QE, i7-2655LE, i7-2610UE, i5-2515E, i5-2510E are the processors that supports the 16 GB of RAM. Since all of these processors are dual memory channel so they will not support 3* 4 GB memory configuration. By what you are saying it looks like that it has two SODIMMs on each slot! If there are only two slots then it will depend on the laptop manufacturer and the motherboard that you are using if they support 2* 8 GB RAM , then only you can use 16GB of RAM on these processors.

If you will go to the specified link then check for the i5-2520M processor, you will see that this processor actually has maximum memory size of 8 GB dependent on the memory type. If you say that Dell support told you that you can have 12 GB of RAM then it is really hard to understand how it will work! I found the configuration with XPS 17, Intel i7 processor and 3D graphics included that supports the 12 GB of RAM. But it seems that this has the 4 slots then why can’t we have 16 GB of RAM?

This link might just help you understand:

    http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/...datasheet.html

This document says that integrated Memory Controller (IMC) supports two independent 64 bit channel with DDR 3 technology support. It also suggest that it supports maximum of one un-buffered and non-ECC DDR3 DIMM per-channel, thus you can have two device ranks per slot. Here is the chart:

    • here is the data transfer rate for DDR3:

    PC3-8500:1066 MT/s, PC3-10600:1333MT/s , PC-12800:1600 MT/s
    • SO-DIMM modules :

Raw Card A ual Ranked x16 unbuffered non-ECC
Raw Card B ingle Ranked x8 unbuffered non-ECC
Raw Card C: Single Ranked x16 unbuffered non-ECC
Raw Card F: Dual Ranked x8 (planar) unbuffered non-ECC

You can use standard 1GB,2GB, and 4GB RAM and it is supported for x8 GB and x16 devices.

It doesn’t support the memory module with different technology on opposite side of same memory module. Both side should be identical. “Ranking” refers to the mounting of the RAM. Each side is ranked. So if there is specification with dual ranked then it means that there are two chips on both sides. It may look like two devices but it is not. It refers to the ranks and not to cards. Since this is the dual channel system it will have only two DIMM slot only. If you use RAM of 8GB with correct type then you can have 16 GB of RAM with two slots available. Still most of the i5 and i7 shows the ma memory of 8 GB! There is a laptop by the ASUS called G74SX that has 16 GB of RAM with 4 DIMM channels.

I am going with Intel i5-2515E mobile cpu which has 2 cores and four threads. It also gives you 16 GB of memory. Processors with “E” are supported with 16 GB of RAM, but they also have some processors that can allow you to use massive 32 GB of RAM. Alienware m18x is the laptop that will allow you to use the power of 32 GB of RAM.
