My system uses the AMD Athlon II X3 455 Rana 3.3GHz CPU. I am wondering whether this CPU is capable to run Ubuntu or not. Any helpful information will be much appreciated.

I heard that some athlon x3 released the 4th core and L3 cache, running as a phenom.
If you can do the testing Ubuntu, put a CPUZ or a result of Intel burn test, when it was purchased and where.
Ultimately, I think adding an SSD for the system and maybe a graphics card. The CG should be integrated and it is enough to play some games or 3D display seamlessly in Ubuntu Unity office.
Virtualization will be useful for testing distribution and run occasional Windows apps for that which cannot run Linux! And a real sound card.
I'd rather stay on an AMD solution ... I may later seek to overclock ... AMD seems well suited to it, and also to virtualization. And it's a little clearer in the sockets.
