I have heard that there is a compatibility problem among the PCI-E 2.1 cards on PCI-E 1.0 slots but it all depends on the BIOS right? I would like to know whether my motherboard can hold the ATI 5xxx- or 6xxx-series? if it can't then what version of BIOS i should add now. I am planning to get HD5770 or maybe a 6850.

Your motherboard is quite old, but its PCI-Express x16 graphics card must support current hardware incompatibility but difficult to predict.
