First of all i think you need to make sure you have connected the motherboard Fan at right place. i think you might have issue on the connection of the Fan and therfore your getting this issue. i woudl also suggest you to check the Temp set on the BIOs. go to the Bios windows while rebooting and under that go to the PC health settings or something smilar and after that make sure you have set the Temp properly.

I also have an issue with the P5KPL/EPU
    This has been on going.

    My system:

    ASUS p5kpl/epu
    Celeron 1.8Ghz single core
    Corsair 2GB KIT (2x1GB) DDR2 800Mhz DIMM PC6400 - Desktop RAM
    P/S ZM750-HP. Later swapped with a Corsair HX850W.

I thought it was the PSU. Replaced it and all was good for a couple of weeks.
Now the same problem is exhibiting itself again.
I've removed the first bank of RAM, then the second bank.
    I've removed the video card.
    HDD's make no difference.

This machine is running as a FreeNAS filer.

Some times the machine will run for a few seconds from power on.
    Sometimes a few minutes.
    Sometimes a few hours.

The original PSU was diagnosed as faulty.
Although when I ran a full test of all voltages, it was within tolerances, and I also tested under load.

    Any help please?

Fan of the system starting and stops immediately then I am suspecting that the PSU you are having on the system is getting shutdown due to over voltage. If the Fan is not starting at all then PWM IC located inside of psu is seems to be defective. Also there could be connection fault with the cabinet itself.

    Thanks for your reply

The system has been running for close to 2 years.
The first PSU was replaced with the new one.
After two weeks of running, the new one is now exhibiting the same behaviour that the original one did, just before I sent it back.

A friend suggested trying to plug the machine into another circuit.
I did this, and the machine booted and ran.
I then moved it back to the UPS, and it is now running ok for the last few hours.
I don't think it's magically fixed itself though.
So am still looking for a solution.
What would the over voltage you are referring to, likely to be caused from?
What type of connection fault are you thinking of?

Ok if computer is working properly then loose connection between the motherboard and PSU could be the root cause of the issue. however the problem arises again, feel free to post over here.

Memtested motherboard with PSU connected for a 3 day period before the machine stopped.
All memory tests I saw were successful.
    No HDD's attached.
DVD ROM attached, but this is irrelevant as when it's not attached same behaviour is exhibited.
Graphics card in motherboard slot, but this is irrelevant as when it's not attached same behaviour is exhibited.
So the issue can only be with the motherboard or the PSU.
When I checked the motherboard, the caps all looked fine.

    Any other bright ideas.
