It is quite true that the prices between the Q9550 and the Core i7 920 are very similar, but you must have to consider that to assemble a combination of the Core i7 architecture must invest more in budget motherboard and DDR3 RAM. The Q9550 is a quiet, as long as they have sound plate and a good cooling. I suggest the Q9550 for budget and performance. The Q9550 is cooler temperatures than the Q6600, but if you has an excellent cooling system, the Q6600 does not reflect a bad outcome.

When I speak of a good cooling system is in reference to a sink in conjunction of a Cooler for more performance than the original brings the processor, since the performance of the stock heatsinks and coolers are no good, let alone if you plan to OC. Referring to the liquid cooling system, if it is expensive, it is recommended to assemble parts, you must have a good base budget, but to perform well a CB can get very good marks sinks as Cooler Master, Thermaltake among many other brands, reflecting excellent dissipation at a price not so high as to acquire a liquid cooling system.

I do not think i7 worth buying yet, this technology is now too expensive for what it is, stay while the Phenom Core2Duo or platform is best for my taste, plus the change to DDR3 still does not seem to have advantages DDR2 rem. So its better to purchase the Core i5. The overall rating is in the end just out of the office areas, together multimedia and games. Since the theoretical tests such as 3DMark, Cinebench, Sandra and the computation of Pi (Super Pi, and MaxPi wPrime) allow any direct statement about the performance in everyday life, you can find these values, no objective result.

Go for the Core i5 itself. Since its a real improvement which has there been, in fact, the turbo mode. Like this in the new Lynnfield processors much better. When he was introduced almost a year ago with the Bloomfield for the first time, however, still resented the drastic increase in power consumption, although the turbo just brought up a gain of 266 MHz with it. As of today, the Turbo has grown up. A clock increase of up to 666 MHz along with various intermediate stages show why Intel integrated this feature in almost every modern processor. The increase in performance is sometimes palpable, while the power consumption increases, however, no longer as drastic as a year ago. Even if for the test itself is not easy to compare results with enabled turbo, the paying customer has at the end does have a significant added value. The "Turbo 2.0" offers a Core i7-870, for example, performance increases of up to 25 percent (Cinebench 1-CPU), while increasing the power consumption of the complete system in the said benchmark only 16 watts or 13 percent.
