Is it possible to upgrade RAM on Compaq R3000 AMD

I'm attempting to put 1GB RAM into my notebook PC. The laptop has a 2x256MB slot. Only one of the sticks is currently available. So the highest memory in the specifications is 1.25GB. I have a Compaq R3000 AMD64, with an enForce3 chipset. The stick is PC2800, similar as the old stick. I am certain it is installed properly. I catch all static safety measures. The BIOS identify the RAM - 1.25GB totality. But Ubuntu just won't. I've have both 9.12 and 9.04 x32 installed. No booting has been done. Memtest only demonstrate the 768k of base RAM, and not any extended RAM shown - not even the preliminary 256MB. I tried turning on boot logging, but the /var/logs/boot was still empty. When I turn off the splash screen, I see a whole mess of mistake, which mostly stem from the reality that there is no extensive memory. I don’t know what is happening? This is the next RAM stick I've tried, so I'm pretty convinced that's not the problem. I simply have two days to make a decision whether to replace it! Please help, please let me know through your thoughts?

Have you ever tried to remove the 1GB RAM stick from the motherboard? Does this solve your problem if so then it may be the stick or the leads on the motherboard that having an issue? If not then the 256 stick could be to blame because of this it is causing you a difficulty. I would recommend that you start preventing out probable causes one by one to try and find the cause why it is having. It can be anything as I above mentioned.

Both Ram components are available just that the top memory is tougher to get to. For this you need to visit to their website to find the manuals on how to do it. I've find motherboards that required both Ram modules to be the similar size or they cannot be Dual Channel Ram.I don't believe that is the problem at this time as I also looked your model up at vital and they contain 3 modules listed. A 256, 512 as well as a 1 GB capacity. You would give the time to search the manuals as well as if you experience comfortable enough accessing the top Ram, you will need to pull the 256 Mb stick out as well as try the 1 Gig in that slot by yourself. If it doesn't perform then it may be mismatched Ram. I do recognize that Compaq used to be a put up with for having proprietary hardware.

According to the vital web site (memory maker/vendor) this system doesn't require sticks of the same size, but they require being PC2700 DDR333 unbuffered non-ecc RAM. In any situation, I believe if the BIOS make out that, then your Operating system should make out it as well, but if it doesn't then you might attempt to go into the BIOS as well as observe if there is several setting to allow the additional memory. Even if not, do save the bios locations on exit to restart because I have seen systems in the history where the OS won't obtain the accurate information from the BIOS except you save the settings after adding memory.

Re: Is it possible to upgrade RAM on Compaq R3000 AMD

It is possible that one of several things is going on here.

1. The memory (RAM) you installed is bad.
2. The memory component was not installed properly, such as not being correctly seated as well as locked in place.
3. There was little debris in the slot that is keeping it from creating proper electrical contact with the connectors.
4. There is a mistake with the motherboard that is reasoning problems with the added memory stick.

So, get rid of the new memory as well as retest the system to be convincing no other damage has been done. If that demonstrates the system is ok then obtain some compressed air and blow out slot and cautiously reinstall the fresh memory, then test it again. If it still unsuccessful, then send the stick back for a substitutes.
