Problems in Athlon XP multiplier lock

The change from a desktop Athlon XP to an Mobile Athlon XP is unfortunately afflicted with two possible problems. First, it can happen that the motherboard refuses to work with a Mobile Athlon XP completely. A possible way out is in a BIOS upgrade of manufacturer supported, even by the mobile processors. Most motherboards do not recognize the mobile processor also as a mobile processor, but as a standard AMD K7 processor. The wrong name but should not create further problems. The second problem lies with the source voltage. The two bridges L8 and L11 describe the maximum and the starting voltage. Above all, to the maximum voltage (L8-bridges) should take a look. The L8-bridges describe "Voltage Identification" code, this VID codes assign the mobile and desktop CPUs, but other voltages to one. By default, all processors in the desktop L8 bridges are closed. For a desktop processor corresponds to a maximum voltage of 1.85 volts. If the processor but at a Mobile Athlon XP, the maximum voltage to 2 volts are set. If the bios recognizes this value as a start-up current, this can damage the CPU. To be on the safe side, you can modify the L8-bridges to reach 00 011 with a VID from a maximum voltage of 1.85 volts in the mobile mode. The above-described problems with the maximum stress does not seem to occur because it depends on the processor version but the motherboard does not depend. A desktop motherboard is closed five bridges are 1.85 volts as the maximum voltage set by a laptop will always take 2 volts.

I am expecting some more information about from other members.

Besides these problems, which are directly attributable to the Mobile Athlon XP, nor can a function in the chipset provide trouble ... What remains is the CPUs on the front side bus (FSB) to overclock. Related to this, however well-known "problems" are, for example, be the memory used by high quality needs to be operated at higher clock can. Such problems arise when using Overclocking multiplier, since the FSB are not here not much trouble (no more than one extreme overclocking). The features PowerNow, Cool'n'Quiet and AMD have been actually designed for mobile applications. They allow the processor / motherboard to increase in load and turn down the multiplier load is frequency (also via the multiplier).

In this way, significantly saving a lot of power in a notebook and heat generation are reduced. The aspect of "power-saving" is reduced to a normal work PC, that hangs from the wall outlet, certainly not as interesting, but the heat seems tempting. Finally, can be constructed in this way quieter systems. Fujitsu-Siemens has the PowerNow! Function in a motherboard series for business users once introduced, but now apparently allowed to fall again. However, this is not also about to get a quiet computer. Our primary goal is overclocking, and - as usual - as easy as possible. In the network, we are there encountered something interesting.

I would like to discuss more about the Mobile Athlon XP. "Changing the multiplier on Windows" option is very tempting. Unfortunately, there is no commercially Mobile Athlon XP processors and if so, are they overpriced hopeless. Also Athlon 64 processors seem, despite the rather cheap 3000 + model to be too expensive. In addition, potters in their own computers already a Athlon XP, but not in the mobile version. The solution is less obvious: One must do from a desktop Athlon XP Mobile Athlon XP one. Impossible? On closer inspection, not necessarily. Comparing the Athlon XP, MP and mobile processors it is striking that these are all the same work have arisen. It is probable that all the cores (processor cores) are equal, they are merely driven differently. Athlon XP and MP CPUs were then tested these already, and the suspicion proved correct. So some Athlon XP CPUs will work in dual-mode dual-board. After closing the (red) bridge should the processor as a Mobile Athlon XP are detected. Nevertheless, it can cause problems.

The tool offers CPUMSR at this time, unfortunately, only the maximum multiplier, which was hired by AMD in the CPU. Enough to underclocking the current setting, but that is not main goal. So you can change the maximum multiplier. For this one has the L6 bridges operate in desktop mode no good meet (hence all closed too). For a mobile processor with these L6 bridges but set the maximum multiplier. To achieve a maximum multiplier of 24, all bridges are open. With this you should keep in mind that some motherboards provide the potential of the L6 bridge maximum multiplier directly on boot. A multiplier of 24 can thus damage the CPU. Separate security for the time being only two bridges, which corresponds to one multiplier of 15 and see if it is set directly on boot, or - as it is right - only be changed by software to this multiplier must.
