What are special measurement of Athlon processors?

I want to know about the special measurement of Athlon processors. For example the main memory. I know that the Phenom is different from the previous AMD processors in some respects - outward appearance when it comes to choosing the beat goes, but also internally, for example on the issue of communication of memory and their settings. In practice, this means that with the increase of the front side bus, logically, also increases the memory clock, but not how to K8-time if it is screwed to the multiplier. The standard DDR2-1066, which is the first time with the AMD Athlon is available in every model, regardless of the reference clock that works really DDR2-1066. Now I want to know more about the memory along with the memory clock. Please provide some detailed notes for it.

When K8, however, the memory clock on each model was different, as our table illustrates again. The memory clock can not be truly free and thus was chosen as DDR2-800 memory is not always operated with the provided 400 MHz. This peculiarity of the integrated memory controller, however, been known for years and already caused the socket 754, Socket 939 and Socket 940 for not quite correct clock speeds. Multipliers by half, this has been reinforced. For the first time supports AMD's new Phenom processor different storage. The options "Ganged" and "Unganged" describe here the operation of the memory controller of the K10. The new mode Unganged is especially promising for memory-intensive applications performance gains, in which the full bandwidth is available. The setting of the RAM in the variant "Ganged" or "Unganged is most programs, but still too new, so they are recognized or not faulty.

The setting of the RAM in the variant "Ganged" or "Unganged is most programs, but still too new, so they are recognized or not faulty.
As a result, is recognized as the "Unganged" mode as a single-channel memory, even AMD's own tools, such as overdrive. Similarly, it's also Everest in the official version 4.20, virtually all previous CPU-Z versions are also affected. Only on the 8th February 2008 released version 1.44 of CPU-Z recognizes many things of Phenom in conjunction with new motherboards perfectly correct, including the proper adjustment of the HT links and of course the memory and the selected mode. Just as the programs recognize this mode - or not - it shall be handled. For example, while the built-in benchmark feature of the Everest Ganged mode certify faster performance, it is on the memory benchmark from SiSoft Sandra reversed. There, the Unganged Mode won almost 10 percent more memory bandwidth for itself, while the advantage of Everest in Unganged mode only around five percent. In most applications, but to examine virtually no difference between the two modes. Since the variant Unganged but first time with the new processor generation, and the matching motherboards Spider platform is available, we have the complete test mode Unganged performed. Depending on how the PC should the interested buyer to check this but themselves and thus find out which is the most advantageous solution for it - is a real recipe is not up to date.

Not a word, but only provided a shortcut, since the start of the new processor for more attention: TLB. More specifically, the talk of the "TLB erratum 298". This is a bug in memory management of the processor, which can lead to data loss. Traditionally, a processor in each requested virtual address first converted by the "Memory Management Unit in a physical address before it is written on the address bus. The MMU has special cache, the Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) which stores each of the last address translations in a table. Here, the virtual (logical) address in several steps to a mostly tree-like organized page table to the physical address is converted. This time-intensive process is buffered for performance reasons in the TLB. The TLB can hold a limited amount of these items and thereby speed up execution of memory accesses considerably. The fault in this area, AMD was forced to disable parts of it completely - the so-called TLB Fix was born.

AMD after the announcement of the error froze the delivery of the Opteron server processors of the type based on the same core, until a new stepping is not available, since there this error could occur rather than the desktop models. Nevertheless, AMD has also motherboard manufacturers in the new boards with an instruction given on the way to integrate a fix into their boards, which solves the problem. This has the result that some are seeing massive declines in performance, while AMD speaks generously of up to 10 percent less power.

The small tool AMD OverDrive (AOD) allows pluggable for Windows turn off the TLB fix. The status display, but also as a member to be adjusted while the little green light is in the upper right corner. Is this only green, it means that the TLB patch is initialized and the system is "absolutely safe" is running. If the green light, however, decorated with a yellow border, the TLB patch is out, which promises higher performance. The third, red border is also a number of registers in a faster mode, which is to promise at special points again a few percent performance gain. Since the documentation and description of the three modes can be much to be desired, exact details are unfortunately lacking. In the initial use of the tool was soon clear that this will take over from the motherboard BIOS settings. Was the TLB Fix enabled in the BIOS, in Windows, the green light, he was at the start of the tool was shown a yellow border. If you wanted this but reset in one direction or another, it came to strange results. In practice this means that with a turned-TLB Fix the system was stable and one in Windows that also could (in theory) off. Taking this into attack but do not come to the fore the same results as if they had left the TLB fix in the same BIOS. The other way round was similar, and sometimes bizarre image - from TLB fix in the BIOS, then Windows, it is sometimes slow slightly again as an asset in the BIOS, and sometimes slightly faster, as the following charts. This may be one reason why the tool from AMD for months still in beta status remains the manufacturer and so far only about third-party - will be published - even on your own site.

The results in the theoretical tests such as the memory latency of Science marrow or SiSoft Sandra are some frightening. How much the TLB bug but restricts is best seen in the latency. The variations of AOD are prepared as described, however the report also points again. These options are not particularly large, these sets do not present Cinebench Allowing such as the TLB-fix, then switches it on Windows but the system is still faster than when the TLB fix in the BIOS directly established. A difference of 200 points in the multi-core test from one to the other mode is not a high percentage, but he is far to go through as a variation in measured values. On the other hand, Cinebench also delivers remarkable results. Thus, the single-core test mode in the green and yellow at the same speed, but puts in the red by 200 points. In parallel, the multi-core test in identical conditions, only 200 points in the green mode is slower, while the yellow and red work the same speed mode. If the TLB Fix fixed in the BIOS, some applications can also be in the yellow or red mode does not move to a performance increase as the memory test by Sandra is impressive evidence. The application of a software under Windows, which is to change the hardware remains, therefore, in this case a very double-edged sword.
