Any cpus that are as powerful as an I7 980x but not the 1 grand price tag

I am looking for some cheaper alternative for Intel Core i7 processor. I know that amd offers some cheaper substitute for that. But I am not aware about any processor in the same power. My work is for graphic support and I had heard AMD has good support for that. What you recommend for that. The Core i7 and Core i5 is a bit costly processor for an high end system.

In comparison to Core i5 you can better choose AMD Phenom II X6. This AMD's first hexa-core processor for the general public usage which was released as Intel has launched Core i7.
