    AM3 chip in AM2 board

I need some help to find out about the Socket AM3. I have a AM2 motherboard and I found that if I place the AM3 CPU on it it might not work fine. Is that correct. Because I had purchased a new processor and the motherboard was old. After finding out the specification I found that this is a AM2 Socket. I had not yet fixed it on the board. I am also looking for a favorable heatsink for it. Also there is some issue about the DDR2 and DDR3 RAM.

It is compatible. Just fix the proices on the motherboard. The new AM3 chip will work on AM2 and on AM2+. You does need to go for a replacement here. You will be surprised to know that these processors on Socket AM2 + are compatible only with the memory of DDR2 memory while the Phenom on socket AM3 is ready and works with both DDR3 and DDR2 is backward compatible with socket AM2 +.

Phenom AM2 + 920 and 940 are not compatible with AM3 motherboards because of lack of memory controller supporting DDR3. To be more exact, it is disabled on the 940 and 920. Unless an AM3 motherboard offers DDR2 , the Phenom will be out and it might be confined to the AM2 + boards. But these Phenom are clocked at 3 GHz and 2.8 GHz which creates some interest in the processor.

The 800 series chipsets from AMD will not be ready run 45nm Deneb Phenom. The chipmaker has decided to provide a first step AM3 motherboards based 790FX amended to provide a complete platform. If users have no more interest in staying on a motherboard with a Socket AM2 + which is compatible with the upcoming Phenom Deneb and wait for new chipsets to enjoy the AM3.

You can use any compatible AM2 CPU cooler which will fit very well with CM AM3. Tthe socket is almost identical physically is fine and it lacks a pine in relation to the AM3 AM2 / AM2 +. So here are some my references the first is the Cooler Master Hyper Z600 with Noctua P12-1300 rather than a S12, the P12 is designed to cool the CPU or GPU and the S12 is queit not nice. A other alternative is the Noctua NH-U12P. If your case is too low to host one of these two coolers then go for Noctua C12P.
